The Clay Room is a small art school and contemporary studio, located at 171 E. 7th Street, Durango , just up the hill from The Strater Hotel.  The studio offers both children and adult classes in much more than just clay.  We host birthday parties, ladies nights, team building and walk in pottery painting.   The studio honors seniors, students, and parents of painting children with a 50%  studio fee discount.  For questions  call  (970) 426-9685 or go to www.artandlaughter.com

Start the week off right with the joy of creativity on Mondays during the School Year
Mar26-May 21 & Sept 17-Nov 12 8 week sessions $135

Preschool Arts 10:15-11:15 , ages 3 & 4, 3/6 students   
   Preschool aged children love experimenting with many kinds of art materials including paints, clay, scissors and glue.  The emphasis of this class will be the joy of creating and the awe of the outcome.   Children will be exposed to arts of other cultures, use recycled materials, respect of each artist and art materials.  
 Home school Arts 11:45-12:45, grades k-5,   Minimum 3 students/ max 7
   During each session students will explore a variety of visual art materials, cultures, and techniques in a nurturing, unrushed atmosphere of respect and joy.  Some (but not all ) projects that will be reoccurring during the three sessions will be clay, both hand building and wheel work, painting, pastels, and fiber arts.
 After School Arts 3:20-4:20, grades k-5,  Minimum 3/ Maximum 8 students  Come chill out after school with some fun art projects emphasizing process and pure creativity.  Many art FUNdementals will be explored including arts from other continents and cultures, sculptures, clay, painting, and drawing.
TUESDAYS March 27-May22  & Sept 18-Nov 13.  8 weeks/ $135
Drawing and Painting 3:20-4:20 grades ages 8-12, maximum 7 students.  This class will emphasize how to really ‘see’ while drawing and painting.  Students will begin to draw more realistically by shading, using perspective and foreshadowing, overlapping, and breaking drawn work into basic lines and shapes.  This class is for students who want to learn more and are very focused since the work covered will include higher level skills.

Each Thursday Clay Session is 4 days and costs $58 which includes all materials, instruction, and firing fees.  Students will have wheel time, and learn hand building techniques. Some projects will be pots, sculptures, and 2D slab work.  For grades 1-5, from 3:20-4:20  minimum 3/ maximum 7

clay on saturdays DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR
Saturday Clay Days are less formal and for all ages even adults.  Children under 6 should be supervised by a parent.   How it works:
Time 10:00-11:15  during the School Year / See summer schedule for other times
 Call to schedule a space (limited to 7 people)
Occasionally (up to one time per month)  the clay studio will be closed for other events . During holidays the studio will close. A monthly schedule will be provided upon request. Cost is $18 per day or purchase a six pack for $96 or a ten pack for $150 (sorry, no refunds, transfers/shared passes o.k.)  If no one reserves a space the clay room will be closed.  If you reserve a space you will be charged even if you don’t show.  Cost includes all clay, firing, glazing, instruction, space, and happiness. No hidden costs. No grumps allowed.

cake decorating
One Day per month, master cake decorator, Luda Woodward, will teach children professional secrets of the trade.  Children will receive a cake, cupcakes, or cookies to decorate the way the professionals do, with pastry bags and real butter cream frosting or fondant.  Each class costs $20 which includes instruction and a generous goodie to bring home.  You will be amazed at what your children create!  Ages 5+  Min. 3 / Max 10
Cake Decorating for Older Children is for those who want to experiment more with the pastry chef’s tools.  In these classes children will make their own frostings and have time to practice many techniques with both fondants and pastry bags. The last class children will receive a real cake to decorate and take home as a final project.  Other classes will consist of practice cakes and one real cookie or cupcake.  Students may take one or all sessions.  There is no prerequisite for any session.   For ages 8-13  min. 3/ max 8  $55
Adult classes are for those over 14 years old and will focus on techniques tailor made to each class.   Adult classes include practice with professional tools and frosting usage.  The class is 1 ½ hours for $25 each.  Min 2/ Max 7

Wednesday June 6, 10:00-11:00, ART FOR NATURE LOVING PRESCHOOLERS, Ages 3-5,  First in a series of workshops for preschool aged children who will be using found materials in nature to create simple sculptures and masterpieces.  $15
Wednesday, June 8,  10:30-11:30  Create a mug and card  for Dad, He can really use the mug after it’s fired in the kiln.  Pick up mugs  during regular walk in painting hours $15
Monday, June 18, 10:00-12:00 DRAW DURANGO!, Ages 8-12.  We will begin in the studio learning about seeing simple shapes and shading.  Next students will venture out to town to draw part of our historic district on sight. $20
Tuesday, June 19, 10:30-11:30, PRESCHOOL II, MAGIC HAPPENS!  Ages 3-5, Create magic wands, other magical masterpieces, and even see a trick or two! $15
Wednesday, June 20, 10:30-11:45, PET ROCKS! Ages 5-10, Retro 70’s rocks are revived, along with a ‘home’ made with love for our most easy to care for and oober creative pets! $18

Tuesday, August 14, 10:30-12:00 Peace Project: For the Shanti Foundation, building schools in Myranmar (Burma).  Students will create artwork showing our culture and thoughts on peace. Some of the work will be sent to The Shanti Foundation to promote cultural understanding. This class cost is by donation, payable at The Clay Room.  All money collected will go directly to this cause. Reservations are required as space is limited.   Open Studio for ages 7-12 Mon-Wed July 9, 10, 11 10:30-12:00 $55 Open studio is a phrase used to describe a wide array of visual art being offered.  In this favorite class students get to choose what they would like to work on with guidance and direction from the instructor.  Some choices will be painting, sculptures,  basket making, beading, paper mache , and much more!

    Dare to Draw!     An  addition to the clay room is foreign language because art is all about culture and our students deserve a taste of it all!  although these classes are primary age specific instructors are able to accommodate private groups of any age.   arrangements for groups should be made with individual instructors.

Polymer Clay Classes for Children at The Clay Room
Please join Jill Stone, local artist and certified science & elementary teacher, to learn techniques for obtaining beautiful mixes of color and making art.  She will be teaching a series of three week classes in which you will transform polymer clay into intriguing designs that you will use to decorate jewelry, magnets, light switch plate covers, etc. Classes will be tailored to the interest and ages of each group. No previous experience is necessary. This class is for children ages 9-14. (4.5 total hours of instruction, $12 materials included). Minimum 3, max 10

Clay Room Policies
No classes when 9R is not in session however the Clay Room may be open for walk in pottery painting.
  Payment options and discounts are available through The Clay Room only. Parks and Recreation also have a scholarship program for those on free or reduced lunch.
Refund Policy:  The Clay Room is a small art school making refunds difficult.  A full refund will be allotted 10 days prior to class.  10% will be deducted per day until the beginning of class,  after that no refunds.  Please be sure you can honor your registration commitment.   Exception; if behavior becomes an issue then a prorated amount will be reimbursed.  Every attempt will be made to communicate with parents and students and come up with an acceptable plan to redirect behavior.  We want all students to be successful.

There is no on line registration but the following form may be copied and delivered or request a form from THE CLAY ROOM.

Payment must be made at registration unless other arrangements have been made.  There is a small scholarship available, please inquire with Bonnie.   The Clay Room cannot prorate for missed days due to illness or vacation.  The Clay Room is a small business operating on a very tight budget.  To help keep this art school afloat I ask that you are thoughtful in your decision to register your child for classes.   If you would like to donate an additional sum of money The Clay Room will use it towards tuition for children who would otherwise be unable to afford classes.  The clay room will match these funds.

By signing below you release The Clay Room from any liability due to injury while attending art class.  You also allow the teacher to administer minor first aid as needed.  The parent or guardian will be notified if more than a band-aid or hug is required.  It is understood any special medical or emotional needs will be brought to the attention of the instructor prior to class.
